Australian Families of Missing People

Australian Families of Missing People

Increasing numbers of Australians and people across the globe go missing each year and this has triggered an expression of national and international concern. Australia has been at the forefront in developing initiatives to combat this problem. People of all ages still go missing, and for the families of those who disappear, the loss is traumatic. Research on the families of long-term missing persons, to this point, has been limited. Therefore, familial experience is not well understood. Little is known of the trauma, loss and grief associated with a missing person within these families. The findings of this study highlight the need for a biopsychosocial framework to understand the ways in which families experience the psychological presence of a person who is physically absent. This framework acknowledges that a person goes missing from a particular social context and that the ambiguity of the loss and the grief the family experiences does not lessen the continuing bond they share with their loved one.

Reparations to the Families of Missing Persons in BiH

Reparations to the Families of Missing Persons in BiH

The conflict in former Yugoslavia made 25.000 to 30.000 people victims of enforced disappearances, of which approximately 10.000 are still missing without trace. The book written in 2010 was meant to point the neuralgic spots in BiH reparations to the families of missing persons, evaluate the overall system as well as give certain recommendations, which could be used in the future practice to improve the fate of the vulnerable group concerned. Hence, the research question was: are the currently available national and international legal instruments designed to seek reparations a sufficient mean to get it in case of the Bosnian disappeared and their families? The book has examined how the reparations so far granted to this group of victims fulfill the conditions of: completeness, comprehensiveness, complexity, coherence, finality and munificence. The construction of the dissertation has enabled a broader insight to current developments in the theory of reparations to victims of disappearances, as well as to the practice of seeking reparations for enforced disappearances in Latin America, but also in Europe in order to use some models and good practices in the case of BIH.

The Repatriation Protocol of Deceased Migrants in San Diego County

The Repatriation Protocol of Deceased Migrants in San Diego County

Every year thousands of people go missing worldwide. In the United States alone, over 87,000 cases were left unsolved last year, while internationally thousands more remain missing. The National Institute of Justice calls it "The Nation's Silent Mass Disaster" and the problem resonates across borders. Among the missing are a unique group of people that are left unaccounted for; those who illegally cross the international border between the United States and Mexico. Without proper legal documentation, individuals who enter the United States become politically invisible. In death, these individuals can remain invisible, known only as unidentified persons or Does. Repatriation is the end goal for all displaced decedents. Returning people home after death provides closure for the living. Providing this service is a necessary yet often complicated process for individuals involved in repatriation efforts of foreign nationals.

Climate Change Narratives in Australian Fiction

Climate Change Narratives in Australian Fiction

Several major Australian novels about climate change imagine a warmed planet. This is a timely survey of these cautionary tales. There is also a long tradition of Australians, settlers and Indigenous people, writing about the land and the sea, and about how our climate shapes our communities and our future, and about how colonisation and industrialisation too often destroys our environment. This outline begins to locate, question and frame the insights of many past and present Australian authors about changing climatic conditions.

Exoticisation vs. Marginalisation

Exoticisation vs. Marginalisation

The Aboriginal People of Australia has always been seen through different perspectives in various disciplines. Australian literature also encompasses a plethora of their portrayal. This book tries to comprise the portrayal of Aboriginal people in Australian literature, through three different foci --the first would depict the whites perspectives on them, the second would show how the mixed-race saw these aborigines and the last would be the portrayal of the aborigines about themselves. Enveloping these pivotal perspectives, this book would try to bring into socio-political and economic consequences of the Aboriginal people in the present Australia.
