Today World Wide Web is the backbone of our human race. Leave apart commercial or technological transactions, our day-to-day life without the services of the World Wide Web shall be incomplete and to a large extent impossible. With the ever-increasing dependence on the Internet, the traffic on the World Wide Web has increased at an explosive rate causing a rapid increase in the request rate to popular Web sites. These sites can suffer from severe congestion and sluggishness especially during events of mass popularity.The aim of this book is to review the state of the art in Load Balancing techniques on distributed Web-Server systems. We analyse the efficiency and limitations of the various approaches and their trade off and propose a new architecture or model for the purpose.

A New Load Balancing Method For Distributed Memory Multicomputers

The load balancing algorithms are based on the intuition that for better resource utilization it is desirable for the load in distributed system to be balanced evenly. Thus, a load balancing algorithm tries to distribute the total system load among the processing elements such that each processing elements receives approximately equal amount of load. A novel distributed algorithm for load balancing is proposed here which is based on the global load balancing information and current load distribution of the system. A simulation model is developed to compare the performance of the proposed method with the previously stated methods like MCSTLB (Maximum Cost Spanning Tree Load Balancing) method, BTLB (Binary Tree Load Balancing) method, and CBTLB (Condensed Binary Tree Load Balancing) method and Cluster method. Two criteria, the execution time and the number of process migration required by different load balancing methods are used for performance evaluation. The experimental result shows that the execution time and the number of process migration required by the proposed method is better than that of the existing methods.

Efficient Dynamic Distributed Load Balancing Technique

Load Balancing (LB) is a great challenge in dynamic and heterogeneous environment like Grid. Load Balancing based on the idea of migration of excess load from heavily loaded node to lightly loaded ones. The main goal of LB is to increase resource utilization and decreases response time of jobs. An effective and efficient LB algorithm is required to balance the load in dynamic Grid environments. In this book, a distributed, dynamic hierarchical based model has been proposed to represent the Grid architecture in order to manage load. The main feature of this model is that it supports heterogeneity and scalability and, it is totally independent from any physical Grid architecture. Over the proposed model, different load balancing algorithm has been proposed at each level of hierarchy that is suitable for large scale, dynamic and heterogeneous environments. The proposed algorithm have been used a sender initiated policy for load balancing and it prefers to balance the load within its own level of hierarchy whose goal is to decrease the average execution time of jobs, leading to a high improvement in the global throughput of a Grid.
