Icons: Masterpices of Russian Art

Icons: Masterpices of Russian Art

This book presents the finest examples of late-Russian iconography (16th to early 20th Century), with works showing rare subjects, such as Christ aching in the Synagogue by an unknown royal iconographer of the end of the 17th century, or the 19th-century Depiction of an Iconostasis. These masterpieces reveal a whole seam of the nation's cultural inheritance that until recently had been reatively unknown even to specialists. Assembled ring the revolutionary years at Kolomenskoye, a forrmer royal estate in the south-east of Moscow transformed into a Museum of Ancient Russian, this unique collection of Russian icons hides complete sets of icons from the interiors ruined or destroyed churches and monasteries. Masterpieces from the Kolomenskoye Collection comprise icons dating back to the time of Ivan Terrible (1530-84), when the originality of local iconographic schools based on ancient centres such as Novgorod, Pskov and Tver largely disappeared under Moscow's new leadership. Peter the Great's reforms in the 17th Century gave way to western influence in all spheres of Russian lifestyle; Russian iconography underwent major changes in themes, styles and details, with historical figures, landscapes and architectural elements featured, me icons of this showed the architecture of a ole town, such as the panorama of Veliky Ustyug a mid-17th-century icon, or a view of Archangel painted in 1741. By drawing attention to fragments from the icons, this book invites the reader to look to carefully at masterpieces and to investigate details themselves.

The Icon Project

The Icon Project

The Icon Project argues that the transnational capitalist class mobilizes two forms of iconic architecture--unique icons recognized as works of art, notably designed by global starchitects (such as Frank Gehry and Zaha Hadid); and typical icons copying elements of unique icons--to promote the same ideological message: the culture-ideology of consumerism.

The State Tretyakov Gallery is one of the largest museums of Russian art in the country. Its foundation was laid by the Moscow merchant and industrialist Pavel Tretyakov who amassed an excellent collection of national art and donated it to the city of Moscow in 1892. Intended by its founder to be a museum in which Russian artists of all trends were to be represented, the Tretyakov Gallery boasts a unique collection of early Russian icons, masterpieces of 18th- and 19th-century painting and most outstanding works by 20th-century Russian and Soviet artists. Today the State Tretyakov Gallery is a large museum complex with its main building lying on its original site, in quiet Lavrushensky Lane in the very centre of Moscow, and another one located on Krymsky Val and housing best 20th-century artworks. Its branches (House-Museum of Victor Vasnetsov, Memorial Studio of Anna Golubkina, Museum Church of St Nicholas in Tolmachi and others) highlight most important phenomena in the history of Russian art.

Icons: Texts and Contexts

Icons: Texts and Contexts

The existential and historical reading of icons is presented in the book: Icons: Text and Context. The main subject of my study was the medieval icons. The main task was to understand this historical phenomenon from our perspective; it means to observe them in the evolution of mind like “the internal fresh stream”. In the simple way this work gives opportunity to read icons as the text which has the accepted theological, aesthetical and historical level. An important part of this research was the idea to create historical context for the process of reading icons like a text. For the realization of this aim was used several aspects: searching of the phenomenology of icons; specification of the icons language; analyzing the roles of the creators, authors and writers of icons.

Лидия Иовлева,Евгения Петрова Russia - in New York and Bilbao

By the time it closed on January 11, Russia! - the most comprehensive presentation of Russian art ever held in the United States - had become one of the most successful exhibitions in the history of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. With over 401,885 visitors in just 17 weeks, RUSSIA! attracted more viewers than any other special exhibition running for a similar period of time. The exhibition was under the patronage of Russian President Vladimir Putin and made possible by the Vladimir Potanin Charitable Fund. Major sponsors were Sintezneftegaz (Moscow) and the ALCOA Foundation (Pittsburg). A modified and expanded version of Russia! will be presented at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao from March 29 to September 3, 2006. Among the highlights will be sections of religious art from the fourteenth through seventeenth centuries, including rare icons as well as dazzling decorative artworks; remarkable nineteenth-century paintings, among them monumental academic pictures; innovative avant-garde works from the early twentieth century; and epic Socialist Realist paintings as well as a representative section of contemporary Russian art. This project was conceived by Mikhail Shwydkoi, then Russian Minister of Culture and myself during meetings in Venice in the summer of 2001. A team of Russian and American curators worked for three years selecting works from major Russian museums and collections and a distinguished group of authors contributed to the catalogue. A wide international acclaim was echoed in the world media. I am especially grateful to the State Russian Museum and their publication branch "Palace Editions" for producing this book which makes the art works shown in the New York and Bilbao exhibitions and the catalogue essays available to the Russian speaking world. Special credit goes to Yevgenia Petrova, Deputy Director and Chief Curator of the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg for her enthusiastic support in preparing both exhibitions and for making this publication possible. The Guggenheim has a long tradition of exhibiting Russian art and it is gratifying to see another publication in the Russian language which bears witness to our efforts.

We hope this album of Icons will help readers enter the mysterious world of icons, their beauty and uniqueness, and understand what it is that only the icons give - the theology of colour. The order of the icons we present here has been chosen in accordance with the meanings of its subject-matter and the hierarchy ascribed by icon theology to the various figures and representations.
