Top Management Group Pay Disparities: CEO Power and Firm Performance

The issue of pay equity within publicly-traded firms has been a question of growing interest in recent years. Academics, policy-makers, and the general public have become increasingly concerned about the extent to which pay at the highest levels of American business exceeds that received by other workers. Recent studies show that the ratio of CEO pay to that of the average worker grew 380% from a ratio of 107-to-1 in 1990 to a ratio of 411-to-1 in 2005. While attention has been paid to the distribution of pay across the hierarchy of corporations the question of the distribution of pay within top management groups has gone little-studied. Yet, a growing cadre of researchers across multiple disciplines has yielded interesting insights into the antecedents and consequences of pay disparities in top management groups. This book expands on this tradition by introducing a power perspective that seeks to spur further investigation into this strategically relevant phenomenon and to move the current debate beyond extant economic explanations by showing that pay disparities within top management groups arise as a function of the distribution of power with implications for the firm.

4CaaSt is an advanced everything as a service (XaaS) cloud platform. A complex service in its value network can be composed of several products. There a service provider generates revenue from delivering a service to customers but also has to pay for third party cloud products that its service uses. Several price models can be applied to the 4CaaSt products that can take into consideration the actual usage of its customers. The contribution of this Thesis is as follows: identification of appropriate price models for 4CaaSt products, formalization of revenue, costs and profit in a complex service and support for the price discovery and analysis problem of products in the 4CaaSt cloud marketplace. The solution addresses to support deciders to achieve certain business model goals based on the optimization of the prices in the price model of their products. In addition the solution supports to analyze and visualize revenue and cost flow in the product constellation of a service that result at different pricings. The Business Model Simulator (BMS) Web application has been built therefore. The solution of the BMS to address the optimization task is through a meta-heuristic approach. Hence the BMS simulates optimal pricings according to objective functions through a genetic algorithm.

Theoretical analysis of price transmission: A case of joint production

Price transmission along the supply chain is subject of a great number of empirical research papers in agricultural economics; only a few papers have addressed the theory of vertical price transmission. Seminal papers are presented by Gardner (1975) and McCorriston (1989 and 2001) which study the impact of agricultural input price changes on single output prices. Agricultural inputs often serve as ingredients for multiple outputs. In this book the model by McCorriston et al. (2001) is extended to the joint output case. The study shows that price transmission for jointly-produced outputs and also the aggregated price transmission of joint outputs are different from price transmission of a single output. Imperfect price transmission can also be caused by the properties of joint production.
