Strengthening the pay-performance link in government

This study aims to examine the relationship between pay and performance with special focus on the Malaysia Remuneration System (MRS). In the Malaysian Civil Service, the practices of performance pay was first introduced in 1991 under the implementation of the New Remuneration System (NRS). The system gave paramount emphasis in the aspect of performance, thus marked a paradigm shift in the Malaysian compensation practices. The MRS which was introduced in 2002 continued to weigh in the performance aspect as the main indicator in evaluating employees' achievement. Objective assessment of employees' performance has been developed through the implementation of Competency Level Assessment (CLA). It tries to build linkage between pay and performance, hence pay is believed to be a source of motivation. An attempt, therefore has been made to assess the degree of effectiveness of the MRS in strengthening the pay-performance link in the Malaysian government.

Impact of Price Hike on Food Security in Bangladesh

This empirical study examined the impact of food price hike on household food security at different income levels of the people in Bangladesh. The study extensively used national household income, expenditure, and food consumption survey data of Bangladesh together with the weekly time series data on price of rice and wheat. Households having higher share of income on food consumption were found to be the worst affected by the price rise. To understand how international price rise is transmitted into domestic foodgrain market in Bangladesh, cointegration analysis and Error Correction Model were used. The result confirms the existence of long-term equilibrium relationship between international and domestic market price of rice while wheat price did not. Error Correction Model was used to see the short term dynamics as well as long term information of rice price. Although impact of rising rice price in the international market has not been realised immediately in the domestic market due to different price stabilizing programmes and policies of the government of Bangladesh, rising price of rice in international market has long term impact on Bangladesh market.

This book studies the price discrimination through the drug’s market. Using the data from the USA and Chinese drugs’ markets, we are looking for the factors what might affect the price discrimination. Counting the price per mg/ml and classifying the drugs by the diseases, we find that the price discrimination of the anti-infective drugs is the smallest in both countries, the drugs’ prices are positively related to the price discrimination, and the standard deviation of the American drug's prices is smaller than the standard deviation of the Chinese drug’s prices.
