History of Gata Shrine [From Its Foundation to 2000]

History of Gata Shrine [From Its Foundation to 2000]

Although the field of Islam has been neglected in Ethiopian historiography for the last many decades, there are two comprehensive works on national and regional history of Islam in which the coverage given to the institutions of traditional Islam and of shrines is extremely insignificant. This makes our knowledge on dynamics of local Islam incomplete, and of course this triggered the present writer to conduct this research. Sufism is an intellectual and philosophical development has been felt in different shrines of Ethiopia and especially of Wollo. Gata during the time of the ‘saint’ was an effective center of Muslim resistance for Christian domination, Islamic scholarship and was indeed center of diffusion for orthodox orientations. Currently, however, this status of Gata is completely transformed into center of saint worshipping, syncretistic culture, and become one of the notorious shrines of Wollo. The mythology of miracles in the tradition of the shrine has ensured its sustenance by creating emotional and psychological suspense on its audience, and indeed attached pilgrims to the shrine.

Revisiting the roots of an African shrine: The sacred Mugumo tree

Revisiting the roots of an African shrine: The sacred Mugumo tree

The Kenyan history is weaved with the interplay of quintessential religio-political factors. In the past, some of the most important agents were the imperialist, missionaries, scholars and the adherents of African religions and philosophy. The history of central Kenya underlines that the Colonial government, the Missionaries, the African scholars and the Gikuyu elders collaborated in the forging and invention of the Gikuyu identity as we know it today. In the construction of the history, the sacred Mugumo was shrouded with religio-political power and used by the elders for social and religio-political control of the group. It was this religio-political symbiosis which was celebrated and ritualised around this traditional African shrine. Moreover, the sacred Mugumo prepared the ground for the evangelisation in the Gikuyu land and the political hegemony based on power-knowledge and control. Revisiting an African shrine through the sacred Mugumo tree will help the readers understand the Gikuyu cosmology as well as current religio-political conflicts in Kenya and look for solutions which will help the Gikuyu people co-exist harmoniously with other ethnics groups in Kenya.

Jerusalem: The Biography

Jerusalem: The Biography

Jerusalem is the universal city, the capital of two peoples, the shrine of three faiths; it is the prize of empires, the site of Judgment Day and the battlefield of today’s clash of civilizations. From King David to the 21st century, from the birth of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam to the Israel-Palestine conflict, this is the epic history of three thousand years of faith, slaughter, fanaticism, and coexistence. In this masterful narrative, Simon Sebag Montefiore brings the holy city to life, through the people who created and destroyed it - from Herod, Cleopatra and Nero to Churchill, Rasputin and Truman - and draws on the latest scholarship, his own family history, and a lifetime of study to show that the story of Jerusalem is truly the story of the world.

The Canterbury Tales: A Selection

The Canterbury Tales: A Selection

While Geoffrey Chaucer composed several magnificent works of poetry, his reputation as "the father of English literature" rests mainly on The Canterbury Tales, a group of stories told by assorted pilgrims en route to the shrine of Thomas ? Becket in Canterbury Cathedral. From the mirthful and bawdy to the profoundly moral, the tales, taken in their entirety, reflect not only the manners and mores of medieval England, but indeed, the full comic and tragic dimensions of the human condition. Considered the greatest collection of narrative poems in English literature, The Canterbury Tales was composed in the Middle English of Chaucer's day, possibly to be read aloud at the court of Richard II. However, their grandeur, humor, and relevance are timeless, as readers of this authoritative edition will discover.
