Theoretical analysis of price transmission: A case of joint production

Theoretical analysis of price transmission: A case of joint production

Price transmission along the supply chain is subject of a great number of empirical research papers in agricultural economics; only a few papers have addressed the theory of vertical price transmission. Seminal papers are presented by Gardner (1975) and McCorriston (1989 and 2001) which study the impact of agricultural input price changes on single output prices. Agricultural inputs often serve as ingredients for multiple outputs. In this book the model by McCorriston et al. (2001) is extended to the joint output case. The study shows that price transmission for jointly-produced outputs and also the aggregated price transmission of joint outputs are different from price transmission of a single output. Imperfect price transmission can also be caused by the properties of joint production.

Production Frontiers

Production Frontiers

This book presents a mathematical programming approach to the analysis of production frontiers and efficiency measurement. Using linear programming techniques, the authors construct a variety of production frontiers, and develop a model of efficient producer behaviour and a taxonomy of possible types of departure from efficiency in various environments. This book provides a unique study in applied production analysis, and will be of interest to scholars and students of economics and operations research, and analysts in business and government.

Vegetable Marketing Information System in Nepal-A Case of Potato

Vegetable Marketing Information System in Nepal-A Case of Potato

Price of potato seed was found to have negative relationship with the area under potato because potato tuber seed has highest cost share in total cost of production. Most of the farmers were not satisfied with the availability of the vegetable price information aired through Radio Nepal. The lagged farm gate price did not have significant role in area allocation. The cost of production was always lesser than the farm gate price fetched by the farmers. Thus, the farmers were cultivating potato for long time irrespective of the fluctuations in the price of potato. The contributions of yield and area to production were found equal. Reliable marketing information system should be established to reduce the marketing cost and encourage the potato farmers.

Measuring Instability of price and production of Pulses in Bangladesh

Measuring Instability of price and production of Pulses in Bangladesh

This study assessed the production and price instability of pulses in Bangladesh. The study analyzed the data in different ways to capture the different views of instability by the different participants. Grass pea was constituted highest seasonal price instability among the all viewers and pigeon pea was in the lowest ranking. Average model, random walk model, linear trend model, exponential trend model and ARIMA model were applied to determine the production and long run price instability. Average viewers had a feeling of more instability than others for both the cases. ARIMA type models showed the lowest price instability for all kinds of pulses. In case of production instability, trend viewers felt more instability than random walk viewers but in case of price instability, trend viewers felt less instability than naive viewers. Chickpea was found in the first position of production instability in the overall ranking because of low level of disease resistant power. On the other hand, grass pea was in the first ranking for the long run price instability because of more volatility in the demand side. Pigeon pea was positioned in the last ranking for all the cases.

Response of Food Crops Production to Economic Incentives in Kenya

Response of Food Crops Production to Economic Incentives in Kenya

Agricultural development policy in Kenya has over the years focused on providing incentives for increased production of food crops for self sufficiency. Both price and non-price instruments have been advocated for as a means of improving economic conditions for farmers. This book reports results of an investigation on the response of maize, sorghum and millet production to both price and non-price incentives. It discusses the relative importance of price and non price incentives while also exploring the complementarity between them. The arguments suggests that good prices alone cannot produce the desired effects and that a comprehensive policy combining both price and non-price instruments is needed to raise food crops production in Kenya.

Food Analysis and Quality Assurance

Food Analysis and Quality Assurance

The competitiveness of food production is now more dependent on the reliability of the safety and quality of the food; and acceptability of the production procedures than on quantity and price. Quality control is the evaluation of a final product prior to its marketing. Quality Assurance, in contrast to quality control, is the implementation of quality checks and procedures to immediately correct any failure and mistake that is able to reduce the quality of the interim products at every production step. This compendium provides a comprehensive review of production of some food products like dairy, bakery, confectionary, fruits and vegetable industry. The book is informative, interactive and reader friendly. Quality Controllers will gain an understanding of the importance of a QA or Food Safety System of some food products and the importance of their role in the System.

Production Structure in the Context of International Trade

Production Structure in the Context of International Trade

This work deals with the empirical phenomenon of intra-industry trade, i.e. trade in similar goods between similar countries. It treats this phenomenon from the point of view of the theory of production structure, highlighting the importance of sequential nature of production and heterogeneity and specificity of factors of production. The reader is first exposed to the historical development of production and capital theories. Simple theory of production structure is then presented and a useful tool for the analysis of intra-industry trade is developed. In the following discussion of existing theories of intra-industry trade, we make the case for vertical intra-industry specialization and sliced-up production chains across countries. The reader immediately observes the importance of the production structure theory for the analysis of intra-industry trade. We accordingly apply the concepts of the structure of production on intra-industry trade and analyze, in particular, the time- and place-aspects of international production. Finally, we show the relevance of our approach to intra-industry trade for the analysis of business cycle synchronization and Optimum currency areas theory.

Impact of Imported Wheat on the Production Costs of a S.A. Company

Impact of Imported Wheat on the Production Costs of a S.A. Company

South Africa is a net wheat importer as domestic production is insufficient to meet domestic demand. This study investigates the impact of imported wheat on the production costs of a South African milling company. The difference in cost price, per ton, of locally produced wheat is compared with imported cultivars. Composition of the wheat sales market is analyzed to assess the market share of each company, the regions of trade, sale per product type and sale per pack size. The components which make-up the production costs are studied to assess the major cost drivers. Correlation analysis and simple linear regression (OLS) of data gathered through the case study indicates a substantial and significant relationship between the variable producer cost per ton and the end selling price to the customer. Wheat milling firms can incur significant cost savings through the use of imported wheat in the production process.
