Goodman appraises Walsh. And him? So began 40 Days of Dating , a blog documenting each day of the experiment in thorough and visually delightful detail: videos, questionnaires, photographs and text all helped transform the mess of a relationship into beautiful order. It looked great, but the truly compelling thing was the honesty of its contents. Days after the blog launched, it had attracted a readership of half a million. They agreed; they would date each other for 40 days, record their experience in questionnaires, photographs, videos, texts and artworks and post them on their website: fortydaysofdating.

And “Forty Days’ isn’t very artful. It’s contrived and clumsy. Here’s the thesis statement Walsh and Goodman lay out at the project’s beginning: Love is a central.

So, Jessica and Timothy have finished their short, stressful attempt at dating in public. For those unfamiliar with the ‘project’, as its protagonists called it, 40 Days of Dating is a blog created by two young Manhattan-based designers, Jessica Walsh and Timothy Goodman, on which they publish an account of a compelling experiment. Jessica and Timothy have been friends for years but never romantically involved, and decided to try dating each other for 40 days, with each of them writing up their experiences daily on the site.

If all of this sounds like the plot of Hollywood’s latest romantic comedy, you’re not far wrong. Reports suggest film rights to the project are likely to be sold. There’ll be more than a few young starlets jostling for position in order to win the lead parts: my money is on Zooey Deschanel and Robert Pattinson. The final entries – from day 40 – have now been posted on the blog. The experiment is over. And what have we learned? Well, first of all, the screenwriters will have to liven up the plot a little for the movie version.

Because although 40 Days of Dating was an intriguing read, it was never particularly exciting. Partly, this was due to the unfortunate health problems Jessica suffered during the 40 days, but it was also a product of Jessica and Timothy being successful, well-adjusted people who approach every situation analytically. Although constantly referring to each other as ‘crazy’, there was very little spontaneity on display – the relationship between Jessica and Timothy was as meticulously planned as their state-of-the-art web design.

There were very few twists and turns in the story – nobody cheated, no jealous love rivals emerged, and there were no awkward yet hilarious encounters with each other’s parents.

Plot Summary: The film is based on a blog experiment on the part of New York City-based designers Jessica Walsh and Timothy Goodman – the pair describe.

Tim Goodman is a designer based in New York. Finding themselves single at the same time, these two friends decided to embark on an experiment — date each other for 40 days. With one a hopeless romantic and one a commitment-phobe, 40 Days of Dating attracted over 10 million unique visitors, with the world waiting with baited-breath over what would happen between these two friends. The success has garnered a movie deal and a beautifully executed book.

Walsh talked to us about the ideas, the designs and the aftermath of one of the most talked about projects in recent years. After 40 days went viral, we were approached by numerous editors and publishers who wanted us to write a book. We went sure if it made sense to make the blog into a book format unless there was significant new content. After everything, the number one question we received from fans was: What happened after Day 40?

This was a real labor of love for us. One of the most rewarding and surprising aspects of the result of releasing the blog was that we connected to people and started a dialogue about love and relatinoships Ultimately, we knew that our stories and issues were not unlike a lot of people’s issues.

Kisses + Disses : 40 Days of Dating

But first it was simply a blog. More than , fans checked in daily to read the “he said, she said”-style posts, which were recorded during the project then released to the public months later. Throughout the course of their quasi-courtship, the pair said the process of cataloguing their feelings challenged them to confront how they approached love and life, in general. I started going to yoga and running every day.

40 Days of Dating never really felt real until it was over.

The beautifully constructed website—which went live in mid-July—chronicles the experiment of two long-time friends fed up with the New York City dating scene who begin a relationship told through a series of daily blog posts. If virtually every recent article written about modern relationships is to be believed, casual hookups are rapidly replacing more familiar dating practices. That is not the case here. Instead, Walsh and Goodman jumped headlong into a fully formed relationship, complete with weekly couples therapy sessions.

The website has received so much attention over the summer that Walsh and Goodman signed with talent agency CAA. And the detail with which Walsh and Goodman chronicle each day they spend together through responses to a series of daily questions is unparalleled. The actual arc of their relationship, however, is nothing experimental. Reading the blog entries reveals far greater nuance, but the problems they face are not particularly original.

Barely a week after Walsh resolves to quit the experiment, the two have sex for the first time and by the time they head down to Disney World on Day 38 for their rules-mandated getaway, the two appear fully committed to each other. But and stop me if this sounds familiar by Day 39, things have taken a turn for the disastrous, with both unsure about the future of the relationship. Friday is the 40th and final day. A tip of the hat if the story ends with one or both of them running through the Orlando airport and sharing an embrace in the final entry.

For critics, this is all staged hokum.

Friends Jessica and Timothy decided to date for 40 days and write about the experience. The result is 40 Days of Dating , an absurdly captivating blog. It’s easy to fall in love with 40 Days of Dating : a lot easier, as it turns out, than Jessica Walsh and Timothy Goodman are finding it to fall in love with each other. But hey, it might happen. The thrill of the blog — which documents their day experiment — is the uncertainty of it all.

The pair began as friends and decided to try dating for 40 days with a few guidelines: a requirement to see one another every day, a weekly couples therapy appointment, three date nights a week, one weekend trip together, and no seeing anyone else. Outside of that, however, it’s up to Jessica and Timothy, both designers who live in New York City, to decide how to proceed, and that turns out to be more complicated than one might think.

The Trouble With a Public 40-Day Dating Experiment

What would happen if Harry met Sally in the age of Tinder and Snapchat? Manhattanites and graphic designers Timothy Goodman and Jessica Walsh decided to find out — and the platonic friends embarked on the tenuous mission of dating each other for 40 days. The adventure was chronicled in a blog — and now a book — for all to see. The ground rules were simple: see each other every day for 40 days, go on at least 3 dates a week, see a couple’s therapist, and don’t hook up with anyone else in that time frame.

With these rules in place, the two launched their design-heavy blog, “40 Days of Dating,” in , hoping to “cure” one another of their dating bad habits.

For example, on Day 34 — that’s like a year of intimacy in real dating time — Jessica mentions to him that a girl he briefly dated might be at a party.

The duo, who have been friends for four years, decided to embark on a relationship “experiment” after finding themselves single at the same time. They settled on a day timeline, and agreed on six rules: seeing each other every day, going on three dates a week, completing a daily questionnaire, visiting a couples’ therapist every week, going on a weekend trip together and abstaining from dating, kissing or having sex with anyone else.

In an attempt to explore and hopefully overcome their fears and inadequacies, Tim and Jessica will go through the motions of a relationship for the next 40 days: the commitment, time, companionship, joys and frustrations. Can they help each other, or will they fall into their same habits? Will they damage their friendship?

What if they fall in love? Walsh and Goodman have very different approaches to relationships — she tends to “jump right in,” whereas he is more wary of commitment. The experiment started in March , and the pair began uploading their daily questionnaires to the project’s website on July 10th.

The heart of much of what we do as creatives is discovery through experimentation. Often the best ideas come out of spontaneous play. I think play is a mindset, where I allow myself the space and time to experiment and take risks without being afraid of failure. Was that what 40 Days of Dating was about?
